Just a guy following a passion, inspired by the places he visits and the people he meets.
I refer to myself as a fine art photographer which I hope describes my style or working rather than the subject or specific market that i work in.
My passion is to create images as fine art prints, an actual product that is more than just another electronic image. Working with digital, film, alternative processes and in recent years wet plate collodion, whatever works for the subject. For me photography is about creating work that if viewers can in some way connect with or inspire something within themselves then I feel that I have succeeded.
One of my prime photographic subjects is people and portrait work so this current project is taking me deeper into working with the Wet Plate Collodion portraits and alternative printing. Using vintage processes for me is another means of creative expression rather than trying to recreate the work of our photographic ancestors, working with analogue allows us to be far more considerate of the subject and our images.
So where did it all start.
My professional background was a long career in the broadcast tv media industry starting in London before working freelance and finally landing at BBC Scotland in Glasgow, Soon after emigrated from the south east of England in 2000 to the glorious Highland Perthshire I had a life changing phone call….
“How do you fancy going out to the Canadian Arctic to take photos of a guy attempting to trek solo from Canada to the North Pole ?”…“
“Sure, sounds like fun.. when do we go…”
I went, I got very cold, I captured, I came back with a new direction in life…
I finally gave up the day job in 2006 to pursue a career as a portrait and commercial photographer and in 2012 opened Wildgrass Studio with partner and fellow photographer Gill Hunt offering our fine art photography and running training workshops in all aspects of photography.
We both regularly exhibit our work in our studio as well as various galleries and art events across Scotland.
